Reimagining the Workweek

The idea of working smarter, not longer, has been a topic since economist Meynard Keynes' predictions in 1930, where he famously opined that by 2030 we could be working 15 hours a week. Now, companies find themselves questioning the conventional 5-day workweek—striving for a better workplace, improved service, and a higher quality of work.

Following the growing concerns about work-life balance, productivity, burnout, stress and overall employee well-being, the traditional 5-day workweek is under scrutiny. Driven by technological advancements and the success of remote work during the pandemic, teams are now exploring flexible work structures such as hybrid work, seasonal schedules, as well as compressed or shorter working days.

The shift is also influenced by evolving attitudes, particularly among the younger workforce who are starting to prioritise a healthy work-life balance and seek for more experiences. Overall, a movement of measuring results over hours worked is evident in modern workplaces, with a call for better balance and a focus on achieving outcomes.

Our Approach

At EMC Sdn Bhd, we've initiated a pilot program that involves working 4.5 days a week, allowing for a half day on Fridays. This trial aims to create a workplace that not only values productivity but also emphasizes individual well-being and a positive work-life balance. The pilot program is scheduled for the year 2024, with reviews in May, September, and December, leading into early 2025.

Given the unique, existing 12pm to 2pm breaks for Friday prayers in Brunei Darussalam, it makes sense to extend this break for the entire Friday afternoon for our team members. By allowing the afternoon to unfold at a slower pace, our employees have the chance to enjoy a leisurely lunch, engage in prayer, and seamlessly transition into their weekend plans.

“You can’t have deep work without the other partner to it. And that’s rest.”

Decision-Making

Our decision-making process includes a thorough review of metrics and internal feedback. We remain committed to our business goals and responsiveness to our clients. If, at any point, the 4.5-day workweek hinders these objectives, we will re-evaluate our approach and be prepared to change course.

Adapting for Success

We are asking essential questions and gathering data to ensure a seamless transition. How do our employees feel about the 4.5-day workweek? How will they spend their extra time? Is our company equipped to support this change?

Here’s some thoughts from our team

  • “Looking forward to a more balanced week in terms of how many working days vs. weekend days.”

  • I think it's good for workaholic people to keep their life in check.”

  • “I am onboard but also nervous about it. I am thinking hard to make up plans and ways to be more organised to make the 4.5 day workweek work.” #changingalittlebitofmylifestyle #goodchanges

“As a person who values time and freedom, I think this is worth a try. Regardless of the outcome, I am already proud that EMC is challenging us to work more efficiently, rather than simply work harder and longer.”
- Mina Zaini, Junior Consultant

“Work-life balance has always been a debated topic. In such a dynamic industry like ours, going against the normal corporate practices seeps into our own internal protocols. I'm excited to see how this 4.5 day work week will impact the team and our productivity!”
- Caroline Yong, Executive Trainee

Gearing Up for Change

As we venture into this new chapter, we're excited about the possibilities and the positive impact it could have on our team and workplace.

We're committed to shaping a work environment that not only meets the needs of our employees but also sets an example for a better way of working.

What are your thoughts on the 4 or 4.5-day workweek?

Resources

As we navigate the transition toward a 4.5-day workweek at EMC Sdn Bhd, we've recognized the importance of learning from past experiences. Notably, failed trials often stemmed from a lack of complete commitment or from attempting to implement too many changes at once. To aid our discussions, inform decisions, and shape our mindset, we've curated a selection of valuable resources.
